Biography
Lucinda Cusdin was born in Leamington Spa, England in 1987. After completing a Foundation Course in Art and Design at Warwickshire College, she moved to London to study a Fine Art Painting degree at University of the Arts. She now lives and works in Devon, UK.
I am currently interested in our relationship with architecture and pattern. This theme inspires the composition of the works as I like to create structures that direct the movement of the eye. This is an attempt to mimic the way that buildings and pathways direct and control the movement of our bodies. You will find a variety of materials are used to achieve this. For the last two and half years I have been working on different types of metal but am now beginning to experiment with glass, mirror, perspex, wood and watercolours. I like to bring the materials used to build together to add a sculptural element to the paintings.
This fascination has developed from very minimalist drawings I was producing several years ago when I was interested the Minimalist and Abstract Expressionist American artworks from the 1950’s and 1960’s. I used to create my own grids and simple compositions, which can be found in the Drawing Section of this website, but during the last two years I have started to break out of this precise way of working by starting with the grid and then building up the paint in layers, which has resulted in colourful architectural landscapes.
